Adina Joy Levitt has been connecting with her body through Modern Dance since the age of 5 years old when she started taking classes at the Center for Modern Dance Education (in NJ) and continued throughout her college years, at Earlham College, where she choreographed many dance pieces through Dance Alloy.
In 2010, on the Spring Equinox, Adina was one of 11 dancers in the medicine dance "For the One", in an outdoor arbor in Tennessee, where she danced for 2 days in ceremony to a tree and back, to the tree and back again. During this time she was fasting from food and water, sleeping under the stars, & participating in sweat lodges.
Inspired by the freedom she felt dancing among others in a medicine dance, Adina created the Tribal Dance Collective ritual dance group in Iowa City in 2010 where she spent many magical evenings with friends dancing around trees and connecting to the energy of the Earth. Later that year she was lead to begin a 3 1/2 year shamanic apprenticeship (a deep study of Energy).
In 2018 the Our Sacred Bodies Free Form Dance & Movement Series was created after Adina had some health challenges that lead her to listen deeply to her own body. She wove together her love of dance, her passion for healing, with her earth centered spiritual work in a format that would be accessible to anyone who was open.
There was a time in history when many communities danced to connect with the unseen. Adina has a passion to empower others to move out of their heads and into their bodies to receive their own guidance through free form dance and movement. You can see details about the rest of her bio and teachers, including 10 years teaching yoga and 10 years as a shamanic practitioner here.
FAQ
What makes this class Sacred Dance?
Although any dance may feel sacred to a person, this class is called Sacred Dance because of the clear intention behind each weekly class which is held in a ceremonial manner in order to create a space for us to connect beyond Consensual Reality (the term used in shamanic work for this regular reality that most people usually think of themselves in). This class is not linked to any religious affiliation, participants from any background are welcome to attend.
What is the Class Structure?
In addition to dancing this class leaves time for setting intentions, reflection and teaching pieces.
-Opening Circle
-Teaching Theme for the Week
-Dancing/Movement-1 hour
-Closing Sharing (Optional)
This Class IS:
-welcoming to ALL people
-welcoming to those with experience dancing and those new to dance
-welcoming to those who are new to connecting with their Energy Body and those that are experienced
-Free Form Movement-each participant will be dancing in a unique way
This Class is NOT:

-learning steps or a dance routine
-contact improve class (we will not be physically connecting to others)
-a performance for others
-about judging yourself or others
-only for people with previous dance experience

What should I wear?
Anything goes. I invite you to wear something that makes you feel wonderful, magical, and comfortable. Unique handmade combinations are welcome, as well as simple cotton clothing... skirts, pants, plain, decorative, flowing.... anything goes.
I also advise you to wear or bring layers, since you will likely get hot while dancing and it is nice to have the option to have a tank top, shorts or leggings underneath your other clothes. Bare Feet or Shoes are fine.
What happens if I miss 1 or more classes?
Once you pay for the class there will not be any refunds. There will be no transfers of payments for this class to future Our Sacred Bodies Classes. I know that people are busy with lots on their calendars, I can say that for participants who have had to miss classes in the past, they still felt that they received a lot of benefit from the classes they were able to attend.
What kinds of music will we be dancing to?
African, Native American, Medicine Music, Peruvian Healing Songs, Nature Sounds, Shamanic Drumming, Hemi-Sync, and more
What if I'm really excited to come but I feel nervous about dancing in front of other people?
Since public group dancing has become less common in our culture, people sometimes feel nervous about joining into group dancing, especially Free Form Dance & Movement. Just remember that there will be lots of people who are new to this work in the class. To assist all participants to feel less self-conscious the room will be darkened with candles on our center altar. Remember this is a unique opportunity and life is too short to pass by experiences that can truly stir your heart and soul!
